San Francisco 49ers React to Daniel Jones’ Lavish Contract Following Disappointing TNF Loss

In a highly anticipated Thursday Night Football clash at Levi’s Stadium, the San Francisco 49ers put on a commanding performance against the New York Giants. While the 49ers’ defense played a pivotal role in their convincing 30-12 victory, it was Daniel Jones’ performance and his staggering four-year, $160 million contract extension that drew significant attention.

Throughout the game, Jones struggled, completing 22 of 32 pass attempts for a meager 137 passing yards and suffering an interception. His difficulties on the field prompted several San Francisco 49ers players to voice their thoughts on the substantial contract he had signed during the offseason.

An unnamed 49ers defender expressed his dismay, stating, “The dude did not want to throw the ball. Early on, you could tell it wasn’t gonna happen. Everything was a checkdown. At that point, we knew what time it was.”

Jones, who had faced challenges and turnovers early in his NFL career, was expected to rise to the occasion. However, the 49ers defense, hungry for takeaways, managed to secure just one interception in the fourth quarter, thanks to safety Talanoa Hufanga.

Linebacker Dre Greenlaw didn’t hold back, declaring, “Hell yeah, we were trying to get that b—h,” referring to the football. “A lot of people who make all that money don’t even deserve it. I think they took a chance when they paid him. I mean, he’s not bad. And if you ain’t got nothing better…”

Jones’ contract, which averages approximately $40 million per season, places him at the top of the earning chart on the field, surpassing San Francisco 49ers star defensive end Nick Bosa, who averages $34 million per season following his record deal.

Cornerback Charvarius Ward commented on Jones’ salary, saying, “Yeah, $40 million a year is a lot of money.”

The sentiment among the San Francisco 49ers defense was clear, with one player describing Jones’ salary as “unbelievable,” another terming it “ridiculous,” and a third simply stating, “That’s a travesty, man.”

In contrast, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, who outperformed Jones in every aspect during Thursday night’s game, will earn a mere $870,000 in 2023.
