Danny Masterson Sentenced to 30 Years to Life for Two Sexual Assaults

Former American actor Danny Masterson, known for his role in That ’70s Show, has been handed a 30-year to life prison sentence for sexually assaulting two women.

Masterson, 47, leveraged his status as a prominent Scientologist to evade accountability, according to prosecutors.

The sentencing hearing included poignant impact statements from the survivors, with Leah Remini, a former Scientologist and actress, offering support to the victims.

One survivor expressed her regret for not reporting the assaults earlier, stating, “I wished I had reported him earlier to the police.”

Another survivor displayed remarkable forgiveness, saying, “I forgive you. Your sickness is no longer mine to bear.”

Throughout the proceedings, Masterson remained silent, and his wife, Bijou Phillips, openly wept as the judge delivered the maximum sentence.

Masterson’s conviction came in May during a re-trial after the initial jury failed to reach a verdict in 2022. Following his conviction, he was deemed a flight risk and taken into custody.

The actor was found guilty based on the testimony of three women who alleged he had sexually assaulted them at his Hollywood home between 2001 and 2003, during the peak of his television fame. They also revealed that he had drugged them before the assaults.

Masterson was convicted of rape in two of the three cases, while the charges related to the third accuser resulted in a mistrial. Prosecutors have no plans to retry the case.

Alison Anderson, the lawyer representing two of the survivors, commended their courage and strength for coming forward despite facing harassment and intimidation.

Throughout the trial, prosecutors argued that the Church of Scientology had assisted in covering up the assaults, a claim vehemently denied by the organization.

At the time of the assaults, both Masterson and his three accusers were affiliated with Scientology. Some survivors disclosed that they waited for years to come forward because Scientology officials discouraged them from reporting the rapes to the police.

One survivor shared the painful experience of being shunned by her mother, who remains an active Scientologist. “She had warned me ahead of time she wanted to see Danny Masterson locked away for what he’d done to me, but not at the expense of her religion,” she said.

Another survivor revealed ongoing harassment and privacy invasions by the Church of Scientology since she came forward, but she expressed no regrets.

Masterson faced his first rape accusation in 2017, during the #MeToo movement, consistently asserting that the encounters were consensual.

Charges were eventually filed following a three-year investigation by the Los Angeles Police Department. However, prosecutors opted not to pursue charges in two other cases due to insufficient evidence and the statute of limitations.

The sentencing was attended by Jessica Barth, who founded Voices in Action in response to the #MeToo movement. Barth accused disgraced Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein of abuse. Her nonprofit encourages others to report abuse.
