Former Oiler Jordan Eberle Steps Up Again: A Look Back at the Hit that Tested Andrew Cogliano

On Tuesday night, former Edmonton Oiler Jordan Eberle found himself in his third career NHL fight, squaring off against Colorado Avalanche forward Logan O’Connor. While the bout may not have been a major headline, it was Eberle’s response to a significant hit from last year’s playoffs that made it noteworthy.

The incident in question occurred during game six of the first round of the playoffs when Eberle delivered a hit to Avs forward Andrew Cogliano from behind, causing Cogliano to crash head-first into the boards. The consequences were severe, as Cogliano suffered two fractures in his C6 vertebra in his neck. Remarkably, he returned to play in the same game after this terrifying injury.

This Tuesday marked the first time the two sides faced each other since that fateful playoff series. Just over a minute into the game, Logan O’Connor approached Eberle along the boards, signaling his intent to fight, and the gloves came off. Eberle managed to land a couple of uppercuts, while O’Connor responded with a few jabs.

For Jordan Eberle, this was his third career fight. His first took place in January 2018 when he played for the New York Islanders and faced off against Philadelphia Flyers forward Scott Laughton. Fourteen months later, still with the Islanders, Eberle engaged in another fight, this time against Flyers’ player Travis Konecny.

Andrew Cogliano, on the other hand, reflected on the complex nature of his injury during early training camp this year. He admitted that initially, he contemplated retirement due to the severity of the injury. Cogliano mentioned that while he felt fine immediately after the hit, he later experienced some discomfort in his neck. It wasn’t until the following morning that he realized something was seriously wrong.

Eberle and Cogliano were former teammates during the 2010-11 season with the Edmonton Oilers, a memorable year for both players. Eberle’s rookie season saw him score 18 goals and 43 points, while it marked Cogliano’s final season with the Oilers before being traded to the Anaheim Ducks for a 2013 second-round draft pick.
