Notre Dame Football: Coach Marcus Freeman’s Weather-Ready Strategy Triumphs Amid Raleigh Storm

In the world of Notre Dame football, adaptability is key. On a stormy Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium, a lengthy lightning delay didn’t deter the Fighting Irish. The game, which began at noon, saw play halted with 14:45 left in the second quarter, but Notre Dame was already leading 3-0 thanks to Spencer Shrader’s impressive 54-yard field goal early in the first quarter.

However, the weather conditions in Raleigh were far from ordinary. The National Weather Service had issued a flash flood warning for the area until 4:30 p.m EDT, emphasizing the dangerous nature of the situation and advising against unnecessary travel.

For Notre Dame, this was a test of preparation, particularly for their relatively new head coach, Marcus Freeman. Unlike the infamous Hurricane Matthew game in 2016, when Notre Dame faced N.C. State in a game that included a 30-minute weather delay, Coach Freeman assured that his team was ready for such challenges.

In his weekly media update, Coach Freeman revealed that they had intentionally practiced with a wet ball during fall camp, emphasizing the importance of being able to perform under various weather conditions. “No matter what the elements are, we have to go out there and perform. We have a plan,” he stated.

Notre Dame’s season opener in Dublin, Ireland, against Navy had already given them a taste of adapting to weather forecasts. Coach Freeman and his staff had discussed their game-plan adjustments in case of rain. “We’ve talked about it amongst ourselves as a staff that if it rains during the game, what’s our plan? We had to do the same thing for Ireland. The forecast called for rain in Ireland. We have a plan,” Coach Freeman explained.

The emphasis, he added, is always on communication and playing complementary football. Having a sixth-year quarterback like Sam Hartman, who was making his third career road trip to face the Wolfpack, added to their confidence in adapting to the weather. Coach Freeman emphasized the need to strategize for center snaps, whether under center or in the shotgun, to ensure smooth execution and minimize the impact of adverse weather conditions.
