Penn State Football’s Rising Stars Shine Bright Against Delaware

In an impressive showcase of talent, Penn State football’s promising freshman class left its mark on the field during a dominant victory over Delaware. The Nittany Lions secured a commanding 63-7 win, with the young stars making a significant impact on both sides of the ball.

As the game unfolded, Penn State football‘s defense featured five true freshmen and one of them, Jameial Lyons, stood out with a memorable play. Lyons, a formidable force on the defensive line, delivered a punishing sack to Delaware’s quarterback, Zach Marker, as the third quarter drew to a close. This outstanding defensive effort resulted in Delaware failing to score a single point against Penn State’s reserve defense.

On the offensive front, four freshmen, including three on the offensive line and one at tight end, took the field alongside redshirt freshman quarterback Beau Pribula. Pribula, making just his second career appearance, orchestrated a touchdown drive, connecting with sophomore Omari Evans for his second touchdown pass of the game.

In a game that culminated in a lopsided 63-7 victory, Penn State football’s young talents had ample opportunities to gain valuable experience. The Nittany Lions deployed a total of 76 different players during the game, including 12 true freshmen who demonstrated their potential. This display of youthful promise bodes well for Penn State football’s 2023 recruiting class, which, while not as highly touted as the previous year’s class, still earned a place among the nation’s top 15, according to several outlets.

Several freshmen, including cornerbacks Elliot Washington II and Zion Tracy, safety King Mack, and linebacker Tony Rojas, received preseason “green lights” to forgo their redshirt status, and their contributions in the game affirmed the wisdom of this decision. Jameial Lyons, too, may be on the fast track to joining this group after participating in the first two games of the season. The depth and talent demonstrated by these young players offer great promise for the future of Penn State football.

Penn State head coach James Franklin emphasized the significance of games like these, stating, “Being able to play games like that where you get a ton of guys on the field and get your starters off the field, there’s a lot of value.”

The standout performances of the freshmen extended beyond the offensive line, with players like Tony Rojas, King Mack, Elliot Washington II, and Zion Tracy making notable contributions, each recording two tackles apiece, tied for the second-most on the team. Tracy’s speed was on full display with an impressive chasedown tackle during a kickoff return in the second quarter.

The game also provided an opportunity for Penn State football to further develop its young quarterback, Beau Pribula. Pribula played nearly a full half of football and demonstrated his versatility, both passing and running effectively. His performance included three completions for 22 yards and a touchdown through the air, along with 46 rushing yards and another touchdown on the ground.

Coach Franklin hinted at the possibility of utilizing Pribula more extensively in future games, adding an additional dimension to Penn State football’s offense. “You start to mix Beau in a drive or for a couple of series in a game. You gotta spend a ton of time on preparing for that. So that’s exciting for us as well,” Franklin commented.

At halftime, with a substantial lead of 35-7, Franklin challenged his team to maintain their high level of play, even with the reserves on the field. The Nittany Lions responded by outscoring Delaware 28-0 in the second half, providing a strong foundation for the coaching staff and offering valuable experience to the young players.
