Pittsburgh Steelers Face Uphill Battle After Deflating Loss to 49ers

In the wake of a demoralizing 30-7 defeat at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers, Head Coach Mike Tomlin minced no words when discussing the Pittsburgh Steelers’ performance.

“Starting a game 0-5 on third down doesn’t cut it if we want to achieve our goals,” Tomlin asserted. “We need to win those crucial downs, and it’s more than just recognizing the issue. It was a collective letdown across the board. We must coach better, and we must play better.

“… In many ways, we faced an uphill battle today.”

The Steelers, now sporting a 0-1 record for the season, managed to convert just 5 of 15 third-down attempts, while the 49ers (1-0) succeeded on 6 of 13. The first first-down of the game eluded the Steelers until the final two minutes of the first half. Moreover, the Steelers lost the time of possession battle, holding the ball for only 22 minutes and 37 seconds compared to the 49ers’ 37 minutes and 23 seconds. The shortage of offensive plays, especially in the first half, hampered the Steelers’ ability to establish a rhythm or a ground game.

Reflecting on the disappointing performance, quarterback Kenny Pickett remarked, “It ultimately boils down to execution, or rather, the lack thereof. I believe it was more about us not executing than the 49ers outperforming us. I felt confident with what I saw from their defense, but we just couldn’t execute.”

The absence of execution was particularly surprising given that the Steelers’ starting offense had scored touchdowns on all five drives during the preseason. However, in the game against the 49ers, the Steelers’ first five drives yielded only one net yard, no first downs, four punts, and an interception.

Pickett, who completed 31 of 46 passes for 232 yards, displayed promise during a two-minute drill just before halftime, orchestrating a 95-yard drive that culminated in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Pat Freiermuth.

However, Pickett also threw two interceptions and was sacked five times. The problem extended beyond errant passes; there were instances of miscommunication between Pickett and his receivers. Despite emphasizing offensive cohesion throughout the preseason, Pickett and Freiermuth had a misstep on a fourth-down throw to the end zone in the second half, resulting in a promising drive going to waste.

Pickett acknowledged the miscommunication, saying, “These things happen. Pat saw it one way, and I saw it differently. It’s a matter of making corrections, and we will. I’m not concerned about that. What matters is us sticking together, playing balanced football, and executing the things we’ve put so much effort into.”

Najee Harris, the team’s running back who managed 31 yards on six carries, remains optimistic about the Steelers’ ability to bounce back from this defeat. With a Monday night showdown against division rival Cleveland on the horizon, Harris affirmed, “We have 16 games ahead of us. We’re not backing down. This is part of the game; you win some, you lose some. What counts is how we come back next week and secure that win. We’re here, and we’re still excited about the rest of the season.”
