UFC Upset: Sean Strickland Dethrones Israel Adesanya to Claim Middleweight Title

American fighter Sean Strickland has achieved a monumental upset in the world of UFC by dethroning Israeli-born New Zealander Israel Adesanya to claim the prestigious UFC middleweight championship. This historic moment unfolded at UFC 293, marking the return of the Ultimate Fighting Championship to Australia’s largest city after a six-year hiatus.

The 32-year-old Sean Strickland (28-5) had generated considerable attention leading up to the fight due to his controversial remarks at a press conference. However, it was his performance inside the Octagon that truly made a statement, as he secured a resounding victory via a unanimous decision, with all three judges scoring it 49-46 in his favor.

In the post-fight interview, Strickland was visibly emotional and overwhelmed: “Am I dreaming? Am I going to wake up? Someone hit me … I don’t cry much but I’m trying to keep it together right now. I give up so many brain cells to the MMA gods … I thought I’d be walking away a little bloody, a little broken up. I’m a little shocked that didn’t happen.”

UFC Upset: Sean Strickland Dethrones Israel Adesanya to Claim Middleweight Title

Despite being considered the underdog, Sean Strickland enjoyed strong support from the enthusiastic crowd at Qudos Bank Arena. On the other hand, Israel Adesanya (24-3), the reigning champion who had clinched the middleweight title from Alex Pereira at UFC 281 in April, was the clear favorite to retain his championship against Strickland.

However, Strickland’s counterattacking style proved to be exceptionally effective throughout the fight, with the American consistently landing significant shots while Adesanya struggled to find openings to capitalize on.

The turning point arrived early in the contest when Strickland unleashed a clean, straight shot that sent Adesanya to the canvas. Strickland seized the opportunity, launching a flurry of strikes and securing the first round decisively in his favor.

Adesanya attempted a resurgence in the second and third rounds, finding success with his kicks and right-hand shots. Nevertheless, he left himself open for Strickland’s precise counterattacks.

As the battle unfolded, Adesanya encountered difficulties penetrating Strickland’s formidable defense, allowing the American to maintain his lead. In the closing minutes of the bout, Strickland unleashed a barrage of punches and kicks that not only solidified his victory but also earned him the coveted middleweight title.

Reflecting on his remarkable achievement, Strickland acknowledged the motivation he drew from the passionate Australian fans: “You don’t fight that guy with that many highlight-reel knockouts. The majority of my friends, he’s beaten pretty easily. I was even kind of doubting myself at times. But I’ve got to say, the fans in Australia, you guys motivated me. When I’m walking in here and I heard you guys yelling. In that fourth round, I heard you guys yelling. It fueled me.”

Beyond the Octagon, Strickland’s controversial comments at the press conference sparked discussions in the New South Wales state legislature regarding the government’s financial support for the event. Strickland had accepted the fight on short notice after Adesanya’s originally scheduled opponent, Dricus du Plessis, suffered an injury. The fifth-ranked American had earned his title shot through impressive victories over Abus Magomedov and Nassourdine Imavov.

In the co-main event of the evening, Alexander Volkov (37-10) achieved a second-round submission victory over Sydney-born Tai Tuivasa, despite contending with an injury. The Russian fighter dominated the match, landing numerous strikes before securing a chokehold that led to Tuivasa tapping out.
